Wedding Cake Display Ideas for the “DIY”er

I love when I run across a photo that inspires me to create not only a design concept but also a blog posting that I believe will help inspire brides and grooms to be, to stretch their imagination, and take their wedding celebration to the next level. This photo by Aaron Delesie does just that. Not only is the photo of the wedding cake beautiful, but I am obsessed with what the cake is sitting on, or the cake stand. I love the simple bling touches that really add to the overall look of this gorgeous cake. I will have to add this one to my arsenal of fab ideas because I truly have a fascination with cake stands, be they large, small, handmade, colorful, acrylic, glass, whatever. I love how simple it is to create a signature look with a cake stand and cakes just seem to look like they will taste so much better when displayed properly.

Whatever the decor for your wedding reception event and tables may be , consider adding a pop of “wow” to your cake table. That pop can be whatever you feel speaks to you or says something about you all as a couple. The cake table is one of the most photographed items at your event so give your guests something to snap and boast about.

There are lots of options and ideas to use to help highlight your cake, like table linens, table size, floral, candles, etc. Make sure you discuss your ideas with your cake designer so that you both are clear on the size, dimensions and overall look. When considering the design elements, remember, you want something that will enhance the design of your cake, not take away from it or overpower it. You also want to make sure that your choice for the cake stand will support the layers of cake.

Without some sort of cake stand or platform, your cake will be delivered on a basic cake board. To add height and presence, a cake stand is recommended and you can either rent them from your cake designer or make or purchase one yourself.

A sample of the basic platform design you can find on line or rent from your cake designer or wedding planner.

If you want something a bit different or more extravagant looking, consider some of these special touches that are easy to create yourself or along with your wedding planner.

Don’t want to do any painting? You can cover a box or foam board with a fabric or bling wrap of your choice. Just make sure you are using a platform that is sturdy enough to support the layers of cake.
