Wedding Planning – Alternatives to Fresh Flowers

This week in our “Ask the Planner – Wednesday” segment, we discuss ideas and alternatives to using fresh flowers for your wedding decor and/or personal flowers.

As a wedding planner, I am often asked my opinion about different options and ideas for wedding decor. One of the most common questions relates to the flowers, “Are there any alternatives to using fresh flowers for the wedding?” My immediate response would be, “Of course not! Lush, fresh flowers are the only option.”  But then I must remind myself that fresh flowers don’t work for everyone. There are actually people who don’t like fresh flowers at all and those that are highly allergic to the pollen and sap found in fresh flowers. Although there are many types of flowers that are friendly to allergy sufferers, once you have had an allergic reaction to something, you tend to stay away from any and everything similar to it. With that being said, we thought we would share some ideas and alternatives to fresh flowers for your wedding day event.

For a table centerpiece, might we suggest using candles, candle holders and glass vases. You can create something similar to this look from Colin Cowie Weddings in any size to fit the size and scale of your reception tables. Floral buds could be removed if necessary and you would still have a beautiful table centerpiece.

Another idea for a flowerless event…consider a book or vintage themed wedding event. When selecting books, make sure you are selecting things for color, size and flow, like classics, romance, etc. For vintage themes, just about anything old will do.

This centerpiece uses feathers as the focal point. It is used as a table centerpiece here but it could just as well be used at the ceremony as decor for the altar area. Reusing items from ceremony to reception is always a great, affordable option, but only when the ceremony and reception are at the same location.

Now for the personal flowers. You do have options for the boutonnieres, corsages and bouquets as well. Many brides choose to carry a brooch or jeweled bouquet, consisting of various pins, brooches, etc.  One of my favorite options is a beaded bouquet like this one, created by Bridal Bouquets of Ky.

These are bouquets that you and your bridesmaids will keep forever; and let’s not forget the fellas, even though when it comes to boutonnieres, many of the guys are wishing that you will forget about them.

  1. In addition to allergic reactions to fresh flowers, some couples may not have the budget for fresh flowers so the options you listed are great alternatives and will also look very nice.
